Eat Local Year Round

How do I eat local food during the winter?

Meat, milk, seafood, eggs, cheese, honey and Virginia-grown and milled whole grain flours are great local food options in the winter.  Or buy some specialty products like salsa that have used the bounty of the growing season.  Use the many regional food guides for locating these products.

A barrier to eating local food is access to local food during winter months.  During peak season you can get a great price on bulk produce.   If you plan ahead you can have local foods year-round by canning, freezing, storing in oil, and pickling among other  fun methods.
